Nick Africano

Head Coach

Coach Africano hails from Alexandria, VA, where he wrestled for West Potomac HS. He went on to compete for Olivet College in Michigan and lead the program as team captain. He went on to serve as an assistant coach at Falls Church HS, while continuing to compete and train internationally under various Olympians and World Team members. He is an age-level U.S. Open All-American in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle finishing as runner-up and 4th respectively. He transitioned to the helm at the Knights Wrestling Academy in 2019.

As of 2019, Coach Africano has produced multiple conference champions, regional placers, and state qualifiers.

Jacob Boisseau

Associate Head Coach

Coach Boisseau is a native of Falls Church, VA. He attended Falls Church HS and George Mason University, while competing for both of their respective wrestling programs. He returned to Falls Church HS as an assistant coach before taking on the role as Associate Head Coach at the Knights Wrestling Academy.

As of 2019, Coach Boisseau has produced multiple conference champions, regional placers, and state qualifiers.

Matthew Zimmerman

Head Assistant Coach

Raised in Southern Maryland, Coach Zimmerman has been involved with wrestling for the past 20+ years. He competed for St. Mary’s Ryken, where he was a 2x WCAC finalist, state medalist, and 3x National Prep qualifier. He proceeded to wrestle for Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania before moving to Florida. It was there that he coached and helped lead Palm Bay HS to conference, district, and regional championship titles and capped his lone season there with 2 state medalists in 2011. After serving in the Peace Corps, he returned to the states and coached collegiately at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts for two seasons before landing at Bishop Ireton High School (Alexandria, VA) as an assistant coach.

As of 2019, Coach Zimmerman has produced: 6 Scholar All-Americans, 1 NCAA DIII All-American, 4 state medalists, 4 regional placers, and 1 conference champion.

Aston Williams

Assistant Coach

Coach Williams is a Virginia native and makes his debut after gaining extensive experience as a student-athlete. He wrestled at heavyweight for Ferrum College before transferring to Longwood University. Prior to that, he competed at Colonial Forge High School for National Wrestling Hall of Fame member, Bill Swink.

Michael Sicola

Assistant Coach

Coach Sicola is a New Jersey native who competed for Gardner-Webb University before transferring to George Mason University. He represented North Hunterdon High School, where he was a 2x state qualifier. He was also a member of The Edge wrestling club.

Jake Poches

Assistant Coach

Coach Poches comes to Virginia from Portage, Wisconsin where he wrestled youth through high school. During his time in high school, he became a 2x regional champ, 1x sectional champ, 2x state qualifier that included a state title run at 160 lbs in 2015. Immediately after high school, he became an assistant coach in Deforest, WI where he helped lead 3 kids to the state tournament that resulted in a 3rd place finisher and a state champion. Coach went on to walk-on at the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse where he wrestled for a period of time. Coach Poches also gives back to his hometown program by putting on clinics for the youth program during the summer as well as coaching during his winter breaks.

Christopher Boyd

Assistant Coach

Coach Boyd calls southern Virginia home. He attended Randolph Henry HS, where he was a 2x state champion and 4x state finalist. He proceeded to compete for Gannon University. Thereafter, he moved to Pennsylvania, coached wrestling, and has since dedicated his time to helping struggling youths on a professional level.

Rich Berkowitz

Summer Camp Clinician

Coach Berkowitz comes to Virginia by way of Nanuet, New York. He was a 4x county champion, 4x section champion, 2x state finalist, and an Eastern States champion for Nanuet HS before competing for SUNY Cortland. He spent 3 years as head coach at Cayuga HS before moving to Virginia. He has since served as an assistant coach for George C. Marshall HS and followed the head coach to Robert E. Lee HS in 2019.

Over the span of his career, he has produced multiple conference champions, 2 section placers, 3 regional champions, several state medalists, and 2 state finalists.

Cory “Apple” Apps

Summer Camp Clinician

Coach Apps was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and was adopted by a family in Fairfax, VA. He is a Fairfax HS graduate and was a 2x district placer, 2x regional placer, and AAA state qualifier before walking-on to Old Dominion University’s wrestling team. A year later, he opted to pursue a career in coaching by becoming an assistant at his alma mater for 4 seasons and taking the reigns for the Fairfax Police Youth Club (FPYC). Since then, he has earned his bachelor’s degree and is working towards his M.Ed. in Secondary Education at George Mason University . Today, Coach Apps serves as the head coach for George C. Marshall High School.

He has produced 8 district placers, 2 of which were finalists, and 6 regional placers. Additionally, he more than doubled the FPYC numbers from 40 to 80+ youth wrestlers. Among those wrestlers were future state placers and finalists for programs such as W.T. Woodson High School and Robinson Secondary School.

Bishan Shourie

Summer Camp Clinician

Coach Shourie is an alum of Bishop O’Connell HS where he was a state medalist and National Prep qualifier. Upon graduation, he went on to school at Virginia Tech and trained out of the Southeast Regional Training Center (SERTC) with their residential athletes and Virginia Tech wrestlers.

Alex Vergara

Founder

Coach Vergara was raised in Alexandria, VA and has been involved with wrestling for the past 15 years. He competed for Bishop Ireton HS and Longwood University, where he was a state medalist at the former and 3x national qualifier for the latter. He previously served as an assistant coach and lead technician for both St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School and Thomas Edison High School. Vergara is currently the head coach at Bishop O’Connell High School (Arlington, VA). In addition, he provides year-round administrative support to the Knights Wrestling Academy.

As of 2019, Coach Vergara has produced: 1 All-American, 2 state champions, 24 state medalists, 14 National Prep qualifiers, 4 regional champions, and 12 conference champions.
